Kerry Pena

Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, UK

Kerry has been the cardiac valve nurse specialist for the past 10 years in one of the busiest and largest structural centres in UK.  She is responsible for managing the daily activities of the structural heart service from referral to treatment of patients with heart valve disease and ensures that efficient clinical care pathways are delivered.  Her role is vital in maintaining strong collaboration and effective communication within the multidisciplinary team which are keys to ensuring a streamlined patient journey.

She has been an instrument in successful development and implementation of innovative practices to address the different challenges in managing their structural heart patients.  These processes included the single point of referral for all aortic valve disease patients within the region, same-day discharge post-TAVI procedure, virtual wards for structural heart patients, nurse-led clinics. These practices have enabled the centre to grow and perform 500-600 TAVI cases annually.

She actively engages in sharing best practices through education both nationally and internationally.  She is also passionate about promoting patients’ voices for the improvement of heart valve care.
